Summer Band concerts on the common, fairs and bazaars, church suppers,
a colorful Board of Selectmen, Town Meetings that are often better than
Saturday Night Live, good schools, great people and so much conservation land,
it could hold a whole community - these are some of the attributes that make Townsend a
great place to live, work and raise children. The (usually) slow moving
Squannacook river, a premier cold water fishery, meanders its way through Town, and there are many
opportunities for recreation, or just to enjoy the peace and beauty of this
languid waterway.
Situated at the junction of Routes 119 and 13, with rural New Hampshire
bordering us to the North, Lunenburg and Fitchburg to the South, Ashby on the
West side, and Groton and Pepperell to the East, Townsend is uniquely placed
between the rural and the suburban, and has characateristics of both. A strong
independent streak characterizes many of our citizens, and the Town
is quite egalitarian. Growth is controlled by well thought out bylaws, standard zoning is 2 or 3 acres
minimum per lot (depending on the part of Town), Town water in some locations, no Town
sewerage. Good access to Routes 2, 495, 101 and the commuter rail, so you can get
to where you need to go. And if that's not enough, there are always the
Atwood Cuties....
