Description of Services
The Recreation
Commission shall be responsible for the development, operation, scheduling and
coordination of recreation programs for the Town. The Commission shall
have the powers and duties as may be provided by the laws of the
Commonwealth, the Charter, By-Law or other Town Meeting vote.

For Townsend residents and surrounding towns
HAWTHORNE BROOK
MIDDLE SCHOOL *(Respond by 6/3/10)*
MONDAY, JUNE 28-FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2010 (no
program 7/5/10)
- For age 5 or entering
kindergarten to and including age 13.

Townsend Recreation-Counselor in Training (CIT) - 2 week program, 9-noon, at
Hawthorne Brook (July 6-9 + July 12-16)
$50. Replaces volunteers- for age 14 and up, or has completed 8th grade (20
person limit). This program will train the student to become an attentive
counselor. It will prepare the student to apply for various summer camp
positions. Student will learn; how to deal with children in a safe
environment,about health and disability concerns, sport, game and craft
activities and leadership skills. Course ends with a mock interview. No job
offer in the future is guaranteed, however, this program will prepare the
student for their first job!
CIT II program-cost-$50, must have completed CIT program and complete an
interview. Only 6 will be chosen to participate. The CIT II program allows the
students to exhibit their leadership skills. They will shadow counselors for
the six weeks and will lead activities under the direction of a counselor.

Summer Tennis-Townsend/Ashby at the Ashby Town Courts.
August 16-20, Monday-Friday,
1-2 PM 7-11 year olds, 2-3 PM 12 and up. $70 for the

The circus is coming!!
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls...Step right up!
The Kelly miller circus -
Thursday, July 1, 2010, 4:30 and 7:30 Shows at Hawthorne Brook
Middle School. The Kelly Miller Circus, one of only a few traveling shows
still in existence, will appear at Hawthorne Brook Middle School, with shows at
4:30 P.M. and 7:30 P.M., thanks to the sponsorship of Townsend Recreation.
Advance tickets are available at these locations; Bailey's Bar and
Grill, Townsend House Restaurant, Townsend Town Hall, Workers' Credit Union (all in
Townsend) and Goss Farm in Dunstable, MA.
The circus elephants will begin erecting the Big Top at approximately 9:00
A.M. Circus morning, and everyone is invited to come and watch free of charge.
The circus is a fund raiser for Townsend Recreation. Show your support for this
local group by purchasing your tickets early. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6.
for children age 2-11. Price will increase if bought the day of the show.
Parent/Toddler program at the Kid’s Kountry Playground. Counselor will
oversee free play, story
time, craft time, snack time and games, while parents
help. Still seeking person
to run this program. Program will be held June 29,
July
1,6,8,13,15,20,22,27,29, Aug.3 and 5 from 9:30 A.M.-11:00 A.M.
$45.00/child. Parents are
responsible for their own child’s morning snack.

Summer Theater - Noon-2 P.M. in the
Hawthorne Auditorium.
We will be presenting , “King Artie and
the Knights of the Rad Table”, directed by
Abigail Clarke, on 8/5/10 at
12:30. Must commit to 6 weeks of rehearsals.6/28-8/6,
Mon.-Fri., $75. Grade 5 and
up. Try outs will be held at Hawthorne Brook Middle
School in the
auditorium from 2:30-5:30 P.M. on June 4+7th. All that try out will
have a stage role. Confirm

Evening Summer Theater - "Alice", a one act adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s,
“Alice in Wonderland” by
Lindsay Price, will be presented on Friday, August 6, 2010 at 7:00 PM in the Townsend Town Hall. Directed by Nick Lorenzen Try outs will
be held on June 18+25 from
4:30-5:30 PM in the Town Hall.
Rehearsals will start June
30th and will run Wed.+Fri. from 4:30-6:30 PM. No charge.

Softball Players Needed - Softball
skills and games will be included in the training sessions for grades 7-11 for
students from Ashby, Pepperell and Townsend. This free introductory softball
clinic, sponsored by Townsend Recreation, will be held on Sunday evenings from
6-8 P.M. at a local field. The clinic will run every Sunday, starting June 6th
and end August 29th. Several local coaches have banded
together to produce a top-notch clinic. This clinic will help when trying out
for local and school teams. Those currently on town and school teams, as well as
those that want to try the sport are urged to participate.

lbs), towel and water.

Townsend Recreation Commission Policies
All programs are offered to
Townsend Residents on a first come, first serve basis. Townsend Recreation
Commission reserves the right to cancel or consolidate any program that does not
meet the minimum participant registration numbers. Remember nothing terminates a
program faster than waiting until the last minute to register. Avoid
disappointment and register promptly.
Participants' Responsibility
We ask all participants to respect the staff, volunteers, coaches, other
participants, age requirements, and the equipment we use. Additional rules will
be announced at each program. If a participant fails to cooperate with the
rules, the Director reserves the right to dismiss or suspend a participant in
any program without a refund of fees.
Townsend Recreation Commission is not a day care, after-school care program or
babysitting service. Please read and understand the policies. If they are
unclear to you, please ask questions.
All participants must
pre-register for ALL programs. The Recreation Supervisor on duty is solely
responsible for the activity that is taking place. Children should not be left
unattended in the building or at the fields at any time. Please be on time
dropping off and picking up children from their programs. Failure to do so will
result in additional cost of $1.00 per minute or suspension from programming.
Registration
Registrations will be accepted until the program is full or 1 week prior to the
start date. In some cases, registration will be accepted up till the start of
the program. You may register for a program by contacting the Recreation
Director, Karen Clement at clem6six@verizon.net. We accept mail in registration
by printing off a copy of our registration form, and sending a check with the
registrant’s information to Townsend Recreation, C/O Karen Clement, 101 Main
Street, Townsend, Ma. 01469. All Townsend residents will be given first
opportunity to sign up for a program. If a particular program sells out quickly,
non-residents may not be allowed to register.
Non-Residents
Non-Residents can register for programs for an additional fee pending space
available. You must fill out a registration form during the registration times
in order to be placed on a waiting list. Program fee plus an additional
non-resident fee will be collected prior to the start of the program should
space allow.
Payment
Payment is due at the time of registration, check or money order made payable to
Townsend Recreation Commission. A fee of $35.00 will be charged for any check
returned for insufficient funds. No new registration of programming will be
allowed until the $35.00 fee is paid.
Age Requirements
Participants must be of noted age or grade by the first day of the program in
which they are enrolled. No exceptions will be made.
Course Confirmation
No confirmations are sent out!!!!! Please understand that it is the registrant’s
responsibility to know the date, time, and location of any program. A
participant is registered only when payment is received, unless the department
notifies you otherwise. We will only notify you if there are any problems or
changes.
Refunds
All programs are refundable within 7 days before the program starts, unless the
Recreation Commission cancels a program, or you have mailed in a registration
and no openings exist. You may request to withdraw from a program in sufficient
time (7 days prior), pending that a replacement can be found and the Recreation
Commission has incurred no costs.
Photo Policy
Photographs and videos may be taken during some of Townsend Recreation Programs.
These photographs and names may be used in future brochures, slide programs,
bulletin board displays, newsletters and local newspapers, cable, and satellite
providers. If you don't want to have you and or your child photographed and name
published, please let us know ahead of time. Pictures are a nice way to show
others what the programs look like.
Personal Belongings
Please DO NOT bring any valuables, toys, or games to our programs. The
Recreation Commission is not responsible for lost or stolen articles. To be
safe, leave articles or valuables at home unless necessary for the program. We
do not maintain a lost and found for items left at fields and facilities were
programs are held.
