The Townsend Military Band is
believed to be the third
oldest Band in the United States in continuous service. A booklet on the
history of the Band indicates that it officially began in 1838, with roots
back to 1817. Even during the Civil War, the Band was called up, but
stayed and played together.
The Band is currently comprised of musicians from eighteen different
communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
The Band Concert season starts beginning of
June, and runs 10 weeks, every Thursday evening on the Common.
