Board of Health

 

Description of Services

The Board of Health, in conjunction with the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health in Ayer, is responsible for the formulation and enforcement of rules and regulations concerning public health  The Board shall have all the powers and duties given to boards of Health under the laws of the Commonwealth, the Charter, By-Laws or other Town Meeting vote.

 

This task is accomplished through various activities including:

  • Operation of Trash Pickup, Curbside Recycling, and the Recycling Center

  • Capping and monitoring of the old landfill

  • Regulation of Water Wells

  • Regulation of Septic Systems and Title V

  • Inspection of Restaurants and Food Service Operations

  • Inspection of Housing

  • Inspection of public swimming areas, testing of waters

  • Regulation of Horse Stables

  • Education of the Public, about such health issues as

    • Smoking

    • Communicable Diseases

    • Other public health threats like West Nile Virus, Lyme Disease and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.

  • Sharps (Syringes) Collection Program

    The Nashoba Associated Boards of Health, in conjunction with the Townsend Board of Health, has established a program for the proper disposal of syringes (sharps).

    Sharps containers are on sale for $5 each (made payable to the Nashoba Associated Boards of Health) at the following Nashoba offices between the hours of 9am-4pm M-F.  Once the container is full, it can also be brought directly to these offices.

    Sharps can only be accepted in approved containers. Persons who bring loose sharps or sharps in unapproved containers (i.e. detergent bottles, coffee cans, etc.) will need to purchase the appropriate container for disposal and place the sharps in that container before they can be accepted.

The Board of Health would like to remind all homeowners, when or if you plan on selling your home, please be sure to get a Title V inspection and a Water Quality Test plus Radon as soon as possible.  Each report is valid for 2 years from the report date.  A Title V report can be extended for an additional year if you provide two annual pumping receipts,  Don't let a surprise ruin your sale or put off your closing date.
