Cemetery & Parks Department

 

Description of Services

The Cemetery & Parks Department is responsible for the operation of the town's cemeteries, including groundskeeping, maintenance, and burials. The Cemetery & Parks Department is also responsible for maintenance and upkeep of the town's public park areas, such as the Town Common and the playground.

Cemeteries

   

    The Cemetery & Parks Department operates the town's cemeteries, including:

- The Old Burial Ground on Highland Street

- The Riverside Cemetery on Dudley Road, next to the West Townsend Reading Room

- The Hillside Cemetery on Highland Street

Townsend Public Parks

   

    The Cemetery & Parks Department manages the town's public parks and recreation areas, including:

- the Town Common

- the Kids Kountry Playground, located on the corner of Turnpike Road and Eastman Street, behind Spaulding School

- Howard Park, walking trails along the Squannacook River, with access off of School Street (north end) and at the far end of the big bus circle at the front of Hawthorne Brook Middle School

- Old Meetinghouse Park, walking trails, located at the end of Meetinghouse Hill Road, the section that leads south from Highland Street - owned by the town through the Conservation Commission

- Several athletic fields (baseball/softball & soccer): Timberly Park Ball field, West Townsend Soccer field, West Townsend Ball field

 

Other Public Recreation

   

    There are many other outdoor recreation areas and facilities in Townsend that are not owned or operated by the Town, including:

- Willard Brook State Forest, in West Townsend - follow this link for a Trail Map, or go to http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/northeast/wilb.htm

- Townsend State Forest, north of Dudley Road -  follow this link for a Trail Map

- Townsend State Forest, Squannacook River corridor, with accessible fishing, at the end of Old Meetinghouse Road, the section that leads south from Rte. 119

- The Squannacook River Watershed, hiking trails and river walk, located off of West Groton Road

- The running track at the North Middlesex Regional High School football field

- The Tennis Courts at Hawthorne Brook Middle School
